Be Healthy. . .Drink Wine

Is wine good for you? The answer is, "Yes!" There's lots of research providing proof that there really are health benefits from drinking wine.

Flavonoids from the skins and seeks of red grapes are the key to wine being good for you. These flavonoids lower your risk of coronary heart disease by reducing your LDL or bad cholesterol levels. At the same time these flavonoids actually increase your HDL or good cholesterol levels and decrease the likelihood of blood clotting.

Scientists believe that there may be other health benefits from red wine. A recent study discovered that an antioxidant in the skins of red grapes, called resveratrol, may inhibit the growth of tumors in some cancers. It's possible that resveratrol can help treat Alzheimer's and Parkinson's as well and new studies are on the way.

Are some wines better for you than others? Again, the answer is, "Yes!" Researchers at University of California at Davis have concluded that full-bodied dry red wines contain the highest levels of flavonoids and provide the greatest benefits. The number one wine for supplying the most flavonoids is Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir also ranking highly. Sweeter wines and white wines have less flavonoids and are less beneficial.

How much should you drink? Moderation is the key. Women should drink 4 ounces of red wine daily with a meal and men 4-8 ounces.

Pour yourself a glass of red wine and drink to your health. Cheers!

Mac and Two Cheeses with Caramelized Shallots

November 22, 2008 Pasta, Recipes | Tags: Cheese, goat cheese, mac and cheese, Pasta, recipe, Recipes | This was much easier than other mac and cheese recipes that I’ve tried, it had fewer ingredients, and it came together very quickly. I loved the creaminess of the goat cheese and the delicious sweetened onion-y/garlicky bite that the caramelized shallots gave. There was serious depth of flavor for so few ingredients. I didn’t use half and half because I didn’t have any (because I forgot to

Nibbling Through Spain’s Cheese Country (New York Times)

Raquel Viejo in her cheese cave in the Asturias region of northern Spain. THE only words of caution were, “Just be careful you don’t wake up the bats.” I was in a pitch-black cave following a 44-year-old woman wearing tight jeans and a small light strapped to her forehead.

November 21, 2008 — Leng Friday is officially and the weekend is finally here! Can’t wait to dress up for the photo shoot. on Sunday! So exciting. I’ll try to periodically update on the wedding stuff, but I am going to try and keep some things covered until the wedding day (Sorry Sharon!). Gotta keep some suspense going no? haha. Lunch: Salad of mixed greens, red onions, and parm. This salad tasted so good, that I went back for a huge bowl of seconds. I didn’t have a picture of it because I d

Slow Food Mixer at Sea Rocket Bistro

Slow Food has been criticized for catering to a wealthier group of people. Think of all the $125 fundraisers that you've heard about, but didn't actually go to. Recently, a group of Slow Food people in San Diego decided to change that by starting "Slow Food Urban San Diego" (or something close to that wording). They are organizing low cost events so that more people can learn about and enjoy local and sustainable foods. On Wednesday (Nov 19th), we hosted their mixer at Sea Rocket Bistro.

Have You Been Relegated To Bringing The Salad?

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 16:13:33 -0800
It's Thanksgiving and you want to participate in the "making of the meal" on a more highly respected level than just bringing the salad. However, the year you showed up with the weird tofu appetizer to the Turkey Day celebration you sealed your own dumb fate and have infinitely submerged yourself into salad making duty until kingdom come. You are now known as "the beast of the feast" in small circles throughout your extended family. Sad but true. I know, I know, you so desperately want
