Lebanese Wines Rise in Sales Due to Conflict in the Area

The Israel - Lebanon conflict had an impact on the production and the export of wine from Lebanon. The interest for the wines produced by Lebanon increased.

Merchants that sell wine from Lebanon advise about a growing demand for the wines in the area. James Nicholson who has been selling wine from the Beqaa Valley for 20 years said that sales have gone up with about 50 per cent in the last month.

Beqaa Valley is a fertile valley in Lebanon and Syria, located about 19 miles east of Beirut. The valley is situated between the Mount Lebanon to the west and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains to the east and has a Mediterranean climate of wet, mild winters and dry, warm summers. The region receives limited rainfall, particularly in the north, because the Lebanon Mountains create a rain shadow that blocks precipitation coming from the sea. 70 percent of the country's wine producers, representing wineries such as Kefraya, Domaine Wardy, Clos St Thomas, Chateau Nakad and Almaza Beer have their wineries in this area.

During the conflict in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah the Beqaa Valley was the scene of heavy bombing. One of the wine suppliers from the area (Sammy Gosan) who runs the Messiah vineyard in the valley advises that "The harvest is gearing up and we just basically lost a month or more than a month when we usually ship our wines. We had to pray we don't get hit by mistake, but we stayed here and we looked after the wines and the winery, but we could not work, we could not take the chance of working."

Despite the problem of meeting the delivery dates for the products onto the market in such hard violent conditions, the producers have faced a certain amount of sympathetic purchase, because of the difficulties they find themselves in.

Livermore Wine Country

The Livermore Wine Country is located in San Francisco?s East Bay Area approximately 30 miles east of San Francisco. It includes wineries in Livermore, Pleasanton, Sunol, and Castro Valley. This is one of the oldest wine regions in California. The first commercial grapes were planted in the 1840s by Robert Livermore.

If you have not experienced a California wine tour to the Livermore Valley, their wineries are sure to delight you with the quality and variety of their wines. This area has a delightful mixture of large and small wineries waiting for you to explore. Many are only open on weekends, but will make appointments for tasting during the week. Wine tasting is almost always complimentary.

Many of the Livermore wineries are located on or near Tesla Road, a main road south of the city that runs west to east. Driving along this road, be sure to stop at: Cedar Mountain Winery, a small winery well known for their wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon and Ports; Steven Kent, producer of world class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon; and Tesla Vintners, a community tasting room that pours wine from 6 small wineries including Fenestra, John Christopher Cellars, Little Valley, Red Skye, The Singing Winemaker, and Thomas Coyne. It?s convenient to be able to sample wines from many wineries at one stop. Tesla Vintners provides free tasting. If you?re lucky, you?ll visit on a day when live music is provided as well.

Mitchell Katz Winery, stands on the site where the Ruby Hill Winery was built in 1887 in the town of Pleasanton.Mitchell Katz built his winery here in 1998 using bricks and keystones from the original winery. Stop by and enjoy the beautiful facility and sample their many fine wines.

A small winery located in a wooded area in Castro Valley, Chouinard Vineyards is a fun winery to visit. On Sundays throughout the summer you can listen to San Francisco Bay Area artists performing for Chouinard?s ?Music in the Vineyards? concert series. 2006 prices are $35 per carload. Chouinard Vineyards has many varietals to sample, including their gold medal winning Port. You won?t find a friendlier tasting room.

There are two fantastic places to eat in Livermore. Caf? Garre, located at Garre Winery on Tesla Road, makes a terrific lunch stop. Enjoy their fabulous Mediterranean cuisine featuring fresh local foods. There?s a selection of superb salads, sandwiches, and pastas that are sure to please. The Restaurant at Wente serves gourmet lunch and dinner in a casual but elegant atmosphere at Wente Winery?s Arroyo Road location. This award winning Livermore restaurant serves regional American dishes influenced by Italian, French, and California cuisines. The menu changes daily. The food always looks lovely and tastes delicious. When the weather is nice, dine on their outdoor terrace to view the rolling hills, colorful landscaping, and sycamore trees.

In addition to wine tasting, the Livermore Valley also offers challenging golf courses, unique wine country accommodations, hiking, and shopping. Experience the Livermore Wine Country for yourself.

Wine And Cheese Baskets

A popular gift during the holiday season or at exclusive events is the wine and cheese basket. The combination is as old as time, and wins hearts and favors with ease. It indicates a sophisticated palate and a superior appreciation for the good things of life.

Selecting the right wine and cheese is as much a matter of personal preference as of the area from which they are produced. Usually, the amalgam from a particular location works best and saves you much time and trouble while giving. However, when it comes to experimenting with the two, there are myriad styles to adventure with.

Made with as much care and artistry as wine, cheese is a product of careful craft and ingenuity. Prepared from cow, sheep, goat or yak's milk, cheese can be fresh, poached, or hard; with a washed, flourished or natural rind, and melted or cured. Cheese can even be spiced up or enfolded in leaves for new aromas to sink in. Farm cheeses or industrial cheeses come in various flavors and blends that easily match the complexity and varieties of wine produced in the world. It is the painstakingly produced cheese from exclusive farms that are most popular (and expensive).

Red wine usually teams up with most cheeses. Fresh cream cheeses are heady with most white wines and some delicate red wines. Red and white wine work well with goat's milk cheese. Camembert, Brie and other such ripening soft cheeses thrive with fine white wines or fruity reds. Soft and semi-hard cheeses blend well with champagne or sweet sherry. Washed rind cheese integrates best with that region's red wines or stronger whites, while lush semi-aged ones resonate with ros? or local wines. Cheeses like Parmesan, Cheddar or other hard, aged cheeses brilliantly highlight red wines, sweet dessert wines and port. Blue cheeses favor vintage port, as well as strong reds and some whites.

Budgetary, seasonal and personal preferences can lead you to the right choice in cheese baskets. Standard wine and cheese baskets combine spaces for the two items, besides including wine glasses, light crockery, napkins, a cutting board and a cheese knife. Special designer baskets include the perfect wine and cheese combo, crackers and light snacks, exclusive linen and wine accessories.

Everybody is entitled to some fun and relaxation. Whether it's earthy, lively or velvety, savor the wine, nibble the cheese and pamper your taste buds. That's the idea of a wine and cheese basket - that, and to raise the pleasure element that much higher!
